The Carl H. Lindner College of Business needed a modern, innovative space to accommodate and engage current students and encourage future growth. With concrete being a central design element, Lithko Contracting chose Hilltop based on their unparalleled quality control and customer service.
Hilltop provided over 10,000 cubic yards of concrete for the project. The project used three different mixes, including lightweight concrete for the slabs on deck, self-consolidating concrete, and used macro fibers in the mix for the slabs on grade.
Dedicated to research and development, Hilltop Companies used an innovative Ready Mixed Concrete technology product as part of the build: SmartRock™ Plus. Smart Rock™ Plus is a sensor that is placed in the form to indicate when the concrete reaches higher temperatures, signaling that the concrete has reached strength. This allows construction to move more quickly. Instead of the typical approach that takes three to five days to move the concrete forms, Smart Rock™ sensors showed that forms could be moved after two days, saving both time and money. Hilltop also provided a mix that was able to set up faster, which allowed formwork to hold quicker and sped up the project. Hilltop Companies is the only Ready Mixed Concrete company in the region that uses Smart Rock™ Plus technology.

Great American Tower is the newest icon in the Cincinnati skyline. It’s the tallest, strongest, greenest skyscraper downtown. The Class A office complex stands 665 feet and 41 stories tall. At its peak sits a 300-ton, 130-foot exposed-steel tiara inspired by the crown of Princess Diana of Whales.
For the Hilltop, the project included an 8,000-cubic-yard, self-climbing core made with the highest-to-date strength concrete pour in the Greater Cincinnati Region, at 12,000 psi.
Hilltop is proud to have been the premiere concrete supply company for the latest Cincinnati icon, Smale Park. The project needed 4,000 cubic yards of Ready-Mixed Concrete, including speciality colors and pervious concrete. It features 45 acres of beautiful park nestled between the Banks and the Ohio River. It includes a carousel, Anderson Pavilion, fountains, multiple playgrounds, a labyrinth, river trail, tree grove and many more enjoyable amenities. Hilltop products are most easily seen in the recreational climbing walls.
Union Terminal is an iconic, historic structure in Cincinnati that recently underwent a massive restoration. Prus Construction was selected as a top contractor and partnered with Hilltop Companies for their quality product, service and ability to deliver complex mix designs. In total, Hilltop delivered over 4,000 cubic yards (1,560 tons) of Ready Mixed Concrete for the Union Terminal project, with almost 3,000 cubic yards going to the fountain and plaza.
Hilltop created more than twenty mixes for the job, five times more than an average project. Many of the mixes had not been used in the market previously. As an example, Hilltop included special sized aggregates to reach specific fluidity.
Hilltop developed 5 different mix designs for the fountain that gave each the same consistency but with variable cure times, as there were many weather changes throughout the project.
Working hand in hand with Prus and the architectural firm (GBBN), Hilltop’s unique mixes and Ready Mixed Concrete enabled the historic fountain and plaza to return to their 1930’s Art Deco glory
The complexity of the concrete and the project was recognized in the industry when Prus and Hilltop won the “Project of the Year Award” from Ohio Concrete in November 2018.

Built in 1999, “The Jungle,” home of the Cincinnati Bengals contains 65,000 seats, 114 executive suites and 7,600 club seats. Hilltop was the main concrete supplier providing 150,000 cubic yards of Ready-Mixed Concrete. Hilltop also served as the recycler for the previous stadium’s concrete.
Paul Brown Stadium was designed by NBBJ and was the first NFL facility to win an AIA design award. According to the Harris Interactive Survey, it was the only football stadium on America’s 150 Favorite Buildings by AIA as of 2007. It’s one of only three stadiums on the list (the other two being Wrigley Field and the Yankee Stadium).
The Ascent at Roebling Bridge is a residential apartment complex in Covington, Kentucky. Located just across the Ohio River from Downtown Cincinnati, this marvel is one of the many notable buildings that our region has grown to love. For Hilltop, the project included 20,000 cubic yards of Ready-Mixed Concrete; including, 4,000 cubic yards of high strength (8,000 psi), liquid nitrogen cooled concrete.
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) I-71 and Martin Luther King (MLK) Interchange project provided a second entrance into the University of Cincinnati (UC) and “Hospital Corridor,” spurred economic development, and enabled greater access to the area.
Hilltop Companies, Kokosing Construction Co, and environmental engineering firm, Geotechnology, collaborated with ODOT on this multi-year $80 million project to ensure that every phase ran smoothly. Kokosing chose Hilltop Companies due to its ability to provide quality and consistent results, and their history of working collaboratively on complex projects.
Hilltop brought their expertise in materials to the project. In total, Hilltop provided close to 50,000 yards of concrete for this large project, including both ready mixed concrete and flowable fill. This was one of the first projects based on the new ODOT spec book, which changed materials and design requirements dramatically for projects like this. Unusual start times, large pours, and restricted access for trucks contributed to the complexities of the project. Despite these hurdles, Hilltop completed the project on time.
In 2018, Hilltop Companies was acknowledged by the Slag Cement Association (SCA) for exemplifying the versatile applications and durable benefits of slag cement on this project.

With the 84.51° building, Hilltop created a custom self-consolidating mix that is a feature of the building. The architectural design consisted of exposed industrial high-strength concrete is one of the first things you notice when you enter this building. In total, there is 20,000 cubic yards of Ready-Mixed Concrete in the building.
